Inside the Gospels, the opposite rationale that they became angry was that Jesus acted as though he was the Messiah, and claimed he was the "Son of God". This intended that he was both a horrible liar, that he was mad and just imagined it, or that it had been genuine. But Jesus didn't appear to be mad. To make sure that still left only two choices.
